Part of the Gray Gables village of Bourne, Mashnee is not often known or visited by Cape Cod residents. The residential community features scenic views, beach access and a small neighborly vibe.
There are approximately 140 houses on the Island.
Residents and visitors can drive across the one-mile causeway today, however in years past they had to sail or swim because prior to 1939, Mashnee was an island with no mainland access.
The land was originally owned by the Native Americans; a group of Wampanoag Indians, known as Manametts (or Manomets).
Mashnee was developed after 1939 as a summer cottage resort. Many of the cottages remain today, although through the years, a number of residences have renovated to more upscale housing and remain on the Island year round. If you do decide to visit the Island, please do not park on the causeway. The Town of Bourne recently passed an ordinance to not allow parking on the causeway.
